Kisan Suryodaya Yojana

Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Patel has made an important announcement today. Good news for farmers. Let’s find out what he has to say

Suryashakti Kisan Yojana is a farmer oriented scheme of Gujarat Government.  The scheme was launched by the Gujarat government on Saturday, June 8, 2018, under which farmers can generate electricity for their farm consumption as well as sell the surplus electricity to the grid and earn extra income.

Announcing the pilot project of the scheme in Gandhinagar, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani termed it as a revolutionary step towards empowering farmers to generate electricity using solar energy and double their income.

 Plan

Under the scheme, farmers with existing electricity connection will be provided solar panels as per their load requirement.  The state and central governments will provide 50 per cent subsidy on the cost of the project.  The farmer will have to spend 5 per cent, while the remaining 35 per cent will be provided by the state government as a loan at a cheaper interest rate of 7.5-8 per cent.  The duration of this scheme is 3 years, which is divided between a period of 5 years and a period of 15 years.

For the first 3 years, farmers are given Rs.  2 (Rs. 2.5 by GUVNL + Rs. 2.5 by government).  For the next 15 years, they paid Rs.  Will get a price of 2.5.  This is the first scheme in the country where a farmer will generate his electricity and sell the surplus electricity to the state power companies.  The work of this scheme will start from 5th July 2018.  The plan is to install different feeders (SKY feeders) for agricultural solar energy consumption.  Under the pilot project, which is likely to start from July 8, 2018, about 15 feeders will be installed.

About 15,200 farmers in 9 districts of the state will be covered under the pilot project, which will generate a total of 15 MW of electricity.  The cost of the project is around Rs 50 crore.  Today, 4,303 MU or 5% of the total electricity consumption in the state is used by the agricultural sector.  This is a step towards doubling the target of farmer’s income and under it 12 hours power supply will be provided for agriculture during the day which is currently 8-10 hours.
